Campfire Programs

Castellow Hammock Campfire and Night walk
Date: Saturday, April 4, April 25, 2015
Time: 7:00-9:30 PM
Fee: $ 6.00 per person, children 3 and under free!
Learn about some of the nocturnal creatures of South Florida, and then go on a nature hike to look for the Eastern Screech Owl. Roast marshmallows by the campfire upon your return from the hike A fun, affordable and educational evening! Please bring a flashlight, comfortable closed toed walking shoes, and marshmallows to roast.

Mother’s Day Campfire and Night walk
Date: Saturday, May 9, 2015
Time: 7:00 PM – 9:30 PM
Fee: $ 6.00 per person
Treat mom to a special picnic you bring and then join us for our very special owl walk and campfire. Larry and Penny Thompson Pineland Hiking tour
Date: Thursday, April 16, 2014
Time: 9:30 am –11:30 pm
Fee: $ 6.00/Person
Rated: Moderate
Join a naturalist for a fun walking tour of Larry and Penny’s Pine Rocklands. Learn about the importance of this endangered habitat and about some of the many native plants and how they were used by both native americans and pioneers of the area. Bring sun protection, water, comfortable clothing, closed toed walking shoes and lunch if you would like to picnic in the park after the program. Cameras and binoculars also highly recommended!
Meet at Larry and Penny, location to be announced.

Matheson Hammock Hiking Tour
Date: Thursday, May 21, 2015
Time: 9:30 am –11:30 pm
Fee: $ 6.00/Person
Rated: Moderate
Join a naturalist for a fun walking tour of the western trail of Matheson Hammock. Beautiful, winding trails lead past beautiful native hammock trees and a few deep caverns. Learn about the Tropical Hardwood Hammock habitat and how to recognize some of its many incredible trees and shrubs. Bring sun protection, water, comfortable clothing, closed toed walking shoes and lunch if you would like to picnic in the park after the program. Cameras and binoculars also highly recommended!
Meet in the Matheson Hammock parking lot on the west side of Old Cutler road.

Free Classes

Self-Watering Container Gardening
Date: Saturday, April 11,2015
Time: 11:00 pm – 12:30 pm
Fee: Free

Learn how build a few simple and inexpensive self-watering containers for easy plant care. Techniques can be used to grow vegetables, herbs, and house plants. Bring a 2 liter plastic bottle to make your own self-watering planter!

Composting with Worms
Date: Sunday, May 3, 2015
Time: 11:00 pm – 12:30 pm
Fee: Free
Learn how worms can help you recycle your kitchen scraps into an amazing and free fertilizer for your garden or potted plants! Simple and inexpensive do-it-yourself plans for worm bins will be shared, as well as lots of hands-on time with the worms! Pre registration required.

Water Conservation Workshop (We-Lab)
Date: Saturday, May 16, 2015
Time: 11:00 pm – 12:30 pm
Fee: Free
WE-LAB workshops provide engaging science-based,information to Miami-Dade residents explaining how decreasing the demand for energy and water can positively affect air quality and improve the water supply. Participants receive a FREE WE-LAB Toolkit (valued at $75) which includes a water efficient showerhead, faucet aerators, a shower timer, leak detection tablets, compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs, and a light emitting diode (LED) nightlight, allowing them to take immediate action at home to save water and energy. Volunteer Opportunities

Eco-Action Days (volunteer workdays)
Date: (second Sundays) April 12 and May 10, 2015
Time: 10:00-12 PM
Come join us for some fresh air and exercise while you help us control exotics plants in the park, and work on general park upkeep. Please wear work clothes and closed toed shoes, wear sun and eye protection, and bring drinks.

  1. I am interested in scheduling a couple activities for our homeschool group students. I would be interested in a nature program held at night that could include a campfire at the pit at Castellow Hammock park.

    I would also like to organize either guided hike and/or canoe trip for the older children.

    Roger has helped us in the past but I don’t have the phone number to the park. Please contact me so we can arrange these activities. Castellow Hammock park is always a favorite. Thank you.
